The «500» movement began in 1946 as a way of encouraging cheaper forms of motorsport by promoting the use of motorbike engines of 500 cc capacity instead of the larger capacity engines that prevailed prior to the war. The idea caught on and was adopted as a new Formula 3 for international competition in 1950. Many well known names have been involved with 500s including Stirling Moss, Ken Tyrrell, Ivor Bueb, Jim Russell, Les Leston, Peter Collins, Don Parker and a young chap by the name of Ecclestone! |
